While the lyrics are beautiful, and much of the story is conveyed through the beautiful performances, I find I appreciate the Opera more when I know the story.
Familiarize yourself with your chosen opera beforehand, if possible. Every spot in the opera house has a small seat-back screen featuring subtitles in multiple languages, making it simple to follow along with the onstage action, regardless of the language of the performance. Last I checked, they are also available to rent. Bring binoculars if you choose a higher section. But, this is THE OPERA…you don’t have to dress like Julia & Richard in Pretty Woman, but a jacket for the men and a dress for the ladies is quite appreciated.
